Jennifer Harter has been passionate about flowers for as long as anyone who knows her can remember. When she was little, her family’s kitchen table was never lacking a drinking glass full of daisies hand picked from the groundcover, or dandelions harvested from the lawn. Over the years, her reputation for bearing flowers grew. She arrived at every birthday party, baby shower, and holiday with just a little something floral -- in hand, taped to cards, tucked into bows on packages.
Before long, a handful of daisies turned into 15 formal centerpieces, and soon, weddings for family and friends. Word spread about her passion and her talent, and soon it became flowers for friends, flowers for family of friends, and flowers for friends of friends.
“It was never really a choice; it’s just what I do. And I love what I do.”
Jennifer defines her personal style as contemporary meets classic, and regularly demonstrates that they are complimentary. She can push the envelope when it comes to texture and color, never straying too far from the deeply traditional.
“I’m not afraid of peacock feathers; but there’s also something timeless about red roses, the little black dress of flowers.”
She’s demonstrated that the details make the difference, and she’s known for bringing unusual elements to the bouquet, the boutonniere and the vase. She’s incorporated the bride’s grandmother’s strand of pearls into a bouquet (“I had to cross my heart that it wouldn’t fall out; which it didn’t.”) and lined vintage buttons down the side of bouquet stems, applying single matching buttons to boutonnieres to tie together the wedding party’s look.
Her work invokes perfection and playfulness, paying acute attention to detail, and always reflecting her practical nature. In a one-hour sit-down, she can capture a client’s style and vision, taking every aspect of the event into account.
“I can’t get enough of brides’ notebooks,” she emphasizes. “The more fabric swatches, the more little scraps torn out of magazines, the better. I want to see it all.”
Jennifer has worked on many diverse events, from black tie affairs to barefoot garden weddings. She is equally at ease with clients who want exactly what’s on the cover of the latest issue of Modern Bride, and with those who have no idea where to begin.
“Every event has a style, a signature all its own. My job is to make the flowers speak to that style. There’s something spectacular for every budget, for every time of year, for every taste. I pride myself on being able to nail it, every time.”
Jennifer holds both a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara and a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She resides in San Leandro with her husband, Kyle, and a house full of flowers.
